Building Regulation Consent For Solar Panels

Building regulation consent for solar panels. Refer s 43 of the building act 2004. You will need to check that your roof is capable of supporting the additional weight that comes with the solar panels. There are some exceptions to this but for the purposes of this practice note the installation of pv panels to generate electricity does not require a building consent. The panels must not be installed on a building that is within the grounds of a listed building or on a site designated as a scheduled monument.

The installation of solar panels could not occur without consent in writing from the developer who could disapprove it if it ruined the visual impact of the development. Building regulations also apply to other aspects of the work such as electrical installation. The ability of the existing roof to carry the load weight of the panel will need to be checked and proven. Panels should not be installed above the ridgelineand should project no more than 200mmfrom the roof or wall surface.

Some strengthening work may be needed. If you wish to install a solar panel on your roof building regulations will normally apply. Regardless of whether or not planning permission is required for the installation of your solar panels the installation itself is still subject to standard building regulations. If your property is in a conservation area or in a world heritage site panels must not be fitted to a wall which fronts a highway.
